Kultura Film Festival

Let’s talk about human rights in the lens of cultural heritage!

We all want to be represented.

The prior motive in creating our Guild was to have an archive of our heritage through cinema that could be screened in different parts of the country as well as give access to film education that wasn’t readily available in our area. As we were being anchored with grassroots communities in our area, we have discovered that not only our communities were underrepresented but misrepresented in mainstream media and news.

We believe and uphold that “everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.” and “cultural rights cannot be used as a justification to limit other human rights enshrined in international law.” (Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

Living in the Philippines and advocating cinema has been quite a difficult battle not only to challenge the idea that art, particularly cinema, can be a source of inspiration and motivate change. That culture and heritage are not just ornaments or accolades that carry our identity and culture, they are essential in our daily lives, it is the bond that creates community and the marker of our freedom.

We believe that creating a platform showcasing our local narratives is a way to advocate our freedom, reflecting the real status quo of our country, and intensifying the call for human dignity and human rights!
